Oil changes and other types of vehicle maintenance keep your car or truck in excellent shape, but regular washing and waxing is equally important. Along with maintaining the appearance of a vehicle, routine cleaning also stops the formation of damaging rust. Here are some important steps to take to ensure your vehicle remains fully protected.
Prep the Car for Cleaning
Begin by spraying the entire car with a garden hose. In absence of a garden hose, fill a sizable bucket with water and use a sponge to transfer it to the vehicle. Once the vehicle is wet, apply soap to all areas. This will allow time for the soap to loosen stuck-on deposits of dirt and grime.
Scrub the Wheels
The wheels and tires on a vehicle are often the dirtiest, so they’ll need a bit of extra care. Apply soap and scrub with a hard-bristled brush. Once the wheels are clean, use the hose or water bucket to thoroughly rinse the wheels.
Wash From the Top Down
Washing a vehicle from the top down is more efficient since the soapy water will run to the bottom of the vehicle as you clean. Use a sponge or absorbent cloth and be sure to rinse frequently to remove dirt and grime. After you’ve washed the vehicle, rinse and dry it thoroughly.
Apply Vehicle Wax
Once the car or truck is dry, begin applying wax. Using a cloth, apply small amounts of wax to sections of the vehicle. Make sure the vehicle is fully covered before moving to another section. After the vehicle is fully waxed, wait a few minutes, then remove any excess you see. In general, drivers are encouraged to wax their vehicles every three months or so.
