A Guide to Brake Inspections

When it comes to safety, your vehicle’s braking system must work effectively. That’s why brake inspections should take place at least once per year, as yearly checks can detect small issues before they become more severe. However, you should also schedule an inspection sooner if you experience any dysfunction. Here’s what you can expect when your brakes are inspected.

Test Drive and Visual Inspection

A test drive allows the technician to evaluate the performance of the brakes. For instance, brakes that feel soft or spongey can indicate air within the brake lines. If brakes vibrate, the calipers may be stuck within the system. Once the test drive is complete, the technician will look under the hood for a quick visual inspection of the engine and other components.

Fluid Check

The fluid check ensures levels are sufficient and that brake fluid isn’t contaminated. If levels are low, brake fluid will be topped off. The technician will also look for any leaks that could have contributed to low levels. If the brake fluid is contaminated, it will be drained and replaced with fresh fluid.

Undercarriage and Wheel Inspection

To access the undercarriage and wheels, the technician will put your vehicle on a lift to get a good view. The undercarriage is assessed for rust, which can impact vehicle performance and safety. Visible components of the brake system, such as front hoses, will also be evaluated for damage. The wheels are removed next, which allows the technician to look for excessive wear. Keep in mind that the wheels and brake system work in conjunction to stop effectively.

Brake System Check

All components of the braking system will be inspected, including pads, springs, brake shoes, and others. The technician will be on the lookout for wear and other defects that could inhibit your vehicle’s braking ability. Defective components will be replaced, and parts will be reassembled once repairs are complete.
