Why Is My Car Overheating?

Taking good care of your engine ensures your vehicle will always be there for you. Proper engine maintenance also spares you from expensive repairs and inconvenient breakdowns.

Take engine overheating, for instance. Not only will it prevent you from driving your vehicle, it can also cause irreparable harm to your car or truck. That’s why all motorists must be aware of the following overheating issues.

A Fault in the Coolant System

Coolant flows through your vehicle to prevent heat from the combustion process from becoming excessive. You must have the proper level of coolant within the reservoir at all times, or you run the risk of overheating in a relatively short period. While you can always top off coolant when it’s low, you may have a leak on your hands if you find that it’s depleting quickly after top offs.

Problems with the Radiator

Also, part of the coolant system, the radiator is instrumental in releasing excess engine heat. If the radiator is compromised by a repair issue, such as a problem with fan rotation or a faulty pressure cap, overheating is a lot more likely. Being aware of the common signs of radiator trouble ensures you can schedule repairs before a major issue occurs. Look for smoke flowing out from under the hood or a wildly fluctuating temperature gauge. Be sure to have these issues assessed by a mechanic before driving your vehicle again.

Lack of Engine Oil

Oil not only ensures that engine components are well lubricated. It also keeps these moving components cool, as they can heat up exponentially as you drive. When you skip regular oil changes, the oil in your engine will become sludgy and thick. This prevents it from flowing easily through the engine, which can lead to overheating. In general, schedule an oil change once every three months. You can also consult the owner’s manual for more information on necessary maintenance.
