Summer Car Care Tips
Summer in New Mexico can be tough on your car: rain, hail, sun, heat and construction zones can all do a number on autos. At ABC Paint and Body, we want to provide the highest quality care for you, and sometimes the best care we can give is to make sure you don’t have to bring your car to us in the first place.
To that end, here are a few summer car care tips to help you keep your car in the best condition possible:
1. Keep Your Car Clean and Covered
Keeping your car in a garage or a carport provides protection from nearly everything that can cause scratches, dents, fading, cracking and/or eating away at the protective coating. If you don’t have building cover for your vehicle, a UV-resistant car cover will provide more protection than just leaving it out in the open.
Additionally, washing your car regularly to get rid of road dirt, dust, bugs and other environmental factors can help keep them from destroying your car’s paint job.
2. Keep Your Tires Inflated
Check your car’s tire pressure at least once a month. Underinflated tires wear quickly and can compromise traction. Keeping your tires inflated means you have more grip on the road during New Mexico monsoon downpours, so there’s less of a chance your car will be slipping or spinning out.
But, perhaps more importantly, underinflated tires can cause your tires to overheat on summer’s hottest days, which increases your chances of a dangerous blowout.
3. Keep Your Car Ready for the Heat
Your car needs all of its parts running smoothly to avoid heat-related breakdowns and to help you drive through inclement weather. So, make sure:
- Your engine is running well—get any odd noises, smells or vibrations checked out.
- Your battery is charging and keeping a charge (a simple test you can do at any auto parts store).
- All fluid levels are where they need to be.
4. Be Prepared for Breakdowns
Unfortunately, sometimes breakdowns happen, and the best thing you can do for yourself is to be prepared. Stock your car with an emergency kit that includes first aid supplies, water, non-perishable food items, jumper cables, a flashlight (and extra batteries) and some type of road signal. Following the above tips can help you and your car stay cool and out of trouble this summer. But if you do get caught in that hail storm or you a construction zone gets the best of your car, contact ABC Paint and Body!
